Amazon.com Product Description
Pioneer's TS-A1683R 6-1/2-inch four-ways now feature upgraded power handling of 280 watts max. (50 watts nominal). This year, they also feature something they've inherited from the D-Series speakers--a basalt cone. Pioneer continues to set an example with next-generation technology for improved sound: the tweeter, magnets, surrounds, the voice coil wire, the basket and more are all high-performance components that make up a great speaker.

Pioneer's A-Series Speakers

Pioneer A-series speakers outperform factory speakers on nearly every level. Packing a powerful punch, A-Series speakers are equipped with up to three independent tweeters with reinforced woofers, so every beat is heard and felt. Featuring a bigger, better cone than most OEM speakers, the A-series boasts serious output and booming bass. Extra-sensitive tweeters play at higher frequencies and are capable of handling stronger audio signals, resulting in vocals that are crisp and clear, even when you crank the volume.

TS-A1683R Features

Carbon Graphite IMPP Interlaced Aramid/Basalt Fiber Cone
One of Pioneer's major speaker breakthroughs was IMPP (Injection-Molded Polypropylene), which allowed cones to be lighter and more rigid. Pioneer then added long stands of Aramid fibers into the mix, for extra strength. Now, they've gone even further with the TS-A1683Rs, adding basalt and carbon graphite interlaced with long aramid fibers to provide strength and rigidity that powerful bass sound requires. High-density compressed internal architecture is resilient, stacks up against high power well and transfers sound quickly. The result is full-bodied, rich sound with midrange depth that conventional IMPP cones cannot match, and the durability to stand up to the high volume levels, humidity, and temperature extremes that thrash other speakers.

Large Diaphragm Tweeter
The newly developed tweeter disperses sound more widely with superior control, providing listeners with the best sound under all conditions, regardless of listening position or car. And the 1" mounting depth achieves more flexible installation.

Heat Resistant Polyester-Imide Resin Voice Coil Wire
Creating mechanical energy is hot work, especially at high volume levels. And as we all know, heat can cause distortion. That's why the TS-A1683R uses a heat-resistant polyester-imide resin voice coil wire. It allows the voice coil to handle more heat, improving input power handling as well as reliability. So go ahead. Turn it up.

Power Handling
The TS-A1683R now handles a full 280 watts max. power (40 watts nominal). Along with enhanced power handling, you still get the same high performance that all the TS-A's deliver.

5 out of 5 stars Sound great, but fitment may be an issue.   May 10, 2010
Justin W. Panovec
I purchased these speakers for my 2000 Honda Prelude to replace some Polk audio garbage that the previous owner installed (poorly). These speakers WILL NOT fit as is. The Stock "basket" in the door itself needs to be cut out because these speakers have a fairly large magnet. Not a big deal takes about 5 minutes each side with a dremel and a cutting disk. However the 4 tabs around the outside of the speaker used for other mounting options need to be bent up to match the rest of the surround or they will not fit into the space available. Also the posts in the back that the wires attach to are mounted in an odd way. They also need to be bent inward towards each other, and then sealed with electrical tape so they don't ground out against the metal parts in the door. Let me add however these small actions were worth it (for me) for the sound these babies produce. I have a AVH-P4100DVD head unit which makes fine tuning sound a breeze, and a set of Kenwood 3 way 6X9's in the rear deck. The issue I had before with the speakers in the rear deck overpowering the front speakers has been resolved. For those of you who don't know. If your Prelude came with the Premium sound system, and you replace the Head unit, and or the rear speakers, you need to bypass the little black box thats on the underside of the rear deck. The stock system has microphones in the rear speakers that sense distortion and send a signal to this box so it can adjust the sound. If you do not bypass this box you stereo WILL sound muffled, and distorted.

Final thoughts if you have a 5th gen prelude and you want door speakers that will just drop in, look elsewhere. If you don't mind doing a little work for some fantastic sounding speakers look no farther. Also you will want a HU that has a graphic equalizer. These speakers Have great Lows, but the highs can be a little too bright.

2 out of 5 stars Pioneer makes a mistake with these speakers   February 6, 2010

This is one product I would not recommend. I did read the customer reviews but I did not heed the warning that these are an embarrassment to have the name Pioneer on it. They look nice but sound BAD. 2 stars for looking good.

4 out of 5 stars Overall good speakers   January 28, 2010
G. J. Erickson
They sound pretty good, the only problem I have with them is that the covers are not fully screened; just a band across the middle which looks cool but I could see garbage tossed up on the rear deck finding its way into the cone. I bought them for my son to replace his stock speakers (blown) and he's also happy with them. Overall good sound, could use a little more bass but they are 6.5's and for the money they sound great.

Generally I look for the best product to suit my needs regardless of cost or price. This purchase was at time when I needed to watch my dollars. This product fit the requirements and the needs. Best value for 4 way 6½ rounds that I could find. Performance is beyond expectation.
