Amazon.com Product Description
This component system from Pioneer delivers 260 Watts of maximum power (60 Watts nominal), and offers the flexibility and improved soundstage of a component installation. The woofers are rock-solid, literally--basalt fiber (interwoven with aramid) is extremely rigid and lightweight, for serious sound integrity. Pioneer's rear chamber tweeter enclosures boast an extended mid-range frequency, which means improved vocal imaging. And the included crossovers ensure a smooth response from both.

The Pioneer D-Series

D-Series speakers transform an ordinary in-car listening experience into an extraordinary one. Crafted to cater to those with an ear for exceptional audio, the D-series brings you the latest technological advances in sound engineering, including the world's first cone comprised of Basalt volcanic rock fibers. Powerful, solidly constructed, and easy to install, D-Series speakers accurately capture the magic of an artist's live performance.

TS-D1720C Features

Dual-Layer IMX (Injection Molded Matrix) Aramid/Basalt Fiber Composite Cone
To create new D-Series speakers, Pioneer developed the industry's first basalt fiber made from natural rock interwoven with aramid fiber. Used in the surface layer, this Aramid/Basalt Fiber material is highly rigid and better absorbent, enhancing stability and maintaining integrity throughout a wide temperature range.

Rear Chamber Tweeter Enclosure
D-Series speakers feature an exclusive rear chamber tweeter enclosure that we first used in our famed PRS speakers. It extends mid-range frequency for improved vocal imaging and staging.

High-Quality Crossover
The built-in -12dB/Octave HPF and LPF crossover improves the transition from mid to high frequency, for a smoother mid-range to tweeter response. Audiophile-grade capacitors and inductors are used, and all components are encased in a clear acrylic cover for protection.

Smooth Off-Axis Response
The V-shaped tweeter diaphragm and arching wave guides control sound dispersion to make the sound stage wider in your vehicle, and ensure passengers and driver alike enjoy the same great sound.

Fits 6"x8" Applications
The included 6"x8" adapter allows this component set to also be used in many Ford and Mazda vehicles that feature a 6"x8" speaker application size.

Widen your soundstage with this 260-watt component system.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Amazing Amazing!   June 20, 2010
Nathan Moody (Dillsburg PA USA)
These speakers were more than worth the money, and they sound nearly equivalent to my m-audio studio speakers. As long as you have a good clean head unit (I'm using the kenwood excelon 993)and a descent amplifier, these will sing.

I've heard alot of top end speakers and it really depends on what you like to be honest. These are not "aggressive" speakers. If you want something with really sharp highs that can go really loud look elsewhere. Those speakers (such as Mb quart) will have a great wow effect for the first 5 minutes, but will really do a hurting on your ears.

The D series are very warm, detailed, and crisp enough that it doesnt hurt, which is due to the silk dome tweeters.
Another thing I realized is that it has amazing bass response. They nearly sound like mini subs with the amp...I was very impressed.

Overall I would give them an 8/10, but definitely 10/10 for the value...They compare to speakers hundreds of dollars out of their class.

Just remember: Cheap head unit = cheap sound. The source is where it starts..you cant go cheap there.
For an amplifier, I HIGHLY recommend the Jensen 760 4 channel! [...] bucks off of sonicelectronix is an absolute steal. This amp will compare to anything twice its price.
I am powering my d series up front and my two 10" subs bridged and it hasn't kicked off yet.

Hope that clears up any doubt with the negative review before mine.. Also let me remind you that both the amp and the speakers will have a "break in" time. Took mine about 2 weeks.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent speakers!   May 18, 2010
M. McNight (Vegas-baby! USA)
I had these installed in the front doors of my 2002 Ford Escape.

Tried Boom Mat baffles but they suck, the bass was way to tight,
almost painful. So I removed the baffles and let these bad-boy
speakers breath, wow, amazing bass for their size. I'm powering
them each with 50 watts RMS of Pure-Clean-Pioneer power.

If they have a down-side it would have to be the large tweeters,
rather large in the world of car audio. But my installer got them
to fit. They look and sound awesome! Just be careful how you wire
the crossovers so the treble dosen't overwhelm you.

4 out of 5 stars Sound great in my 2005 Silverado!   March 17, 2010
MGB (California, USA)
I picked these up to replace the stock junk speakers in my 05 Silverado. These sound much better than the stock speakers. It is a pain to find a good place to mount the xover, but well worth the effort. I put baffles behind the speakers to protect them, and improve the sound. I had to cut the center out of my stock tweeters to mount the new ones in, but that was no problem really. Until I pick up a new amp they are powered directly off of my Pioneer AVH-P4000DVD head unit, and they still sound great. My only complaint would be that Pioneer changed from metal to plastic mounting ears, and during the install one of them split while screwing it in to the door. It still holds, but I don't like that it happened. If it wasn't for this I would have rated them five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great, Quality Speakers!   December 5, 2009
A. Effertz (Ladysmith, WI)
These speakers are excellent! No distortion when you really turn it up, and everything is very clear and crisp. I figured it would have a little more bass than what it does, but I'm not complaining. Awesome speakers for a great price!

5 out of 5 stars Car Audio Mag was right   October 31, 2009
J. Solle (MESA,AZ)
These speakers sound great. The tweeters are not ear bleeding. The tweeters sound awsome. The mids sound awsome. I read gregs comment and frankly I wonder what kind of amp he's using and what's the amps settings maybe he should take it back and have the installers recalibrate them. He mentioned not great lows well DA their mid range speakers thats what the subwoofers are for. Iam using a ROCKFORD FOSGATE Power T400-4 and could not be happier.
