| Customer Reviews: Good... when it works October 6, 2009 David B. Haynie (Monroeville, NJ USA) I bought one of these to go with a Pioneer GPS unit. This makes it easy, in theory anyway, to hard-wire the GPS audio and power to your car, with automatic switching between car audio and GPS audio.
It all pretty much works as stated. If you're not handy with rewiring your car's stereo, you may want this professionally installed. If you have standard DIN connectors, it's pretty easy... if not, get out that soldering iron (that's what I did, I have a 2003 Prius).
My main complaint.. after about a month, the audio switch failed. I could listen to GPS audio just fine (and it does include an MP3 and video player, plays from SDHC cards), but it never switched back to my original stereo system.
So I replaced it... I was planning to RMA to Pioneer, and probably still will... but I caught a second one here for $20, and figured that was a hassle-free price to get my radio and CD player back. The new one is currently working, though I do have concerns about longevity.
Gotta have it. April 6, 2009 Johnny Mac (Reno, NV) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
If you're integrating an AVIC-F500BT with an OEM stereo system, you gotta have the amp. It's cheap, and it enables all the cool features of the head unit.
Awesome partner for your AVIC-F500BT March 23, 2009 Jillako (Fremont, CA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
What a concept! Have your "portable" GPS unit function like an in-dash GPS, who wouldn't want that?
That's what this box promises and delivers, although the install can be rather involved. My car doesn't have space for a double-DIN unit, so I opted for the AVIC-F500BT and the ND-G500. I also got the iPod cable and external microphone CD-VM1.
Went with a professional install - the original estimate was 2 hours of labor but it ended up being more like 4 hours. The end results are worth it - I can play radio/cds through my regular stereo but when using Nav or bluetooth calls, the audio is muted and audio from the AVIC-F500BT is cut in. Of course, playing music from the F500BT will also cut out your stereo audio.
When parking my vehicle, I remove the F500BT from its mount and hide away the cables and it looks normal (without navigation).
